Popular Reclaimed Flooring Species Part I: Maple and Beech
We love reclaimed flooring, and we make no secret of the fact. The choice of wood flooring is vast, so, to help people make this choice we thought it would be a good idea to profile some of our favourite reclaimed flooring species, along with those that are most popular with professional buyers, of course these are on top of the benefits of all reclaimed flooring.
Reclaimed Maple Flooring:
Maple is a fine grained wood with a smooth texture, and as such a wood that can be brought to an incredible depth of shine.
In reclaimed flooring Maple is popular for a number of reasons, but the main reasons are
- History
- Our maple is mostly lifted from old schools and gym halls many of which have rich history in the city
- Availability
- Because it is lifted in bulk loads, reclaimed maple flooring is almost always available in our showrooms and online stores — including some reclaimed maple blocks we currently have from the Kilmarnock Academy
- Value for money
- Gym halls and Dance Halls are protected with thick lacquer, this protects the floor from damage, and is constantly reapplied rather than being sanded. This means that buyers of reclaimed maple flooring get a nearly-new maple floor for a fraction of the cost of a new maple floor
Reclaimed Beech Flooring:
Beech is one of the most popular wood flooring species, because it is very much an indoor wood, and has near-unmatched qualities for reflecting light and heat, making a room look and feel bigger. Anyone who has ever been to a modern sports hall has likely seen Beech, because most sports floors in the UK are created using Junkers Beech (and mostly laid and marked with sports lines by us).
Here are some of the main reasons for the popularity of Reclaimed Beech:
- Cheap and Cheerful
- Because most reclaimed Beech is lifted from sports halls, it is lifted with the sports markings still intact. Reclaimed Beech with sports lines is traditionally sold cheaper than without, and is one of the cheapest reclaimed flooring products
- Availability
- Again, we lift reclaimed Beech in bulk, and, because we are one of the UK’s biggest sports flooring contractors we come across a great volume of reclaimed Beech. People tend to buy what they see and they nearly always see reclaimed Beech
- Unique Designs
- The sports lines are not considered a negative by everyone; designers, architects and the like have seen the potential to use the lines to create unique patterns and designs on the floor (see below)
We currently have reclaimed maple and reclaimed beech in stock, priced from £9.36 and £10.21 respectively. To find out more or place an order use the links above, visit our online store, call 0845 602 7694 or email info@reclaimedfloorboards.com.
